Our Fajalauza collection pieces are handmade and hand-painted in southern Spain in a small family-run workshop. We currently offer serving bowls in vintage blue, and in three different sizez. If you need a different color than listed here, get in touch.
Contact usThe large serving bowl now known as fuente semillana seems to be a direct descendant of the Arab ataifor, examples of which date back to the 13th century. Both have a flat base, a short foot and nearly straight walls. Both are meant to be of communal use at the table, sitting in the center, ready to serve.
Large fuentes are a sign of conviviality around which large extended families gather to eat around the table. Given their size and prominent place at the table, these large serving bowls are usually given the repintado treatment — the ornate style of Fajalauza painting developed in the 19th century. Decorations cover the entire surface of the piece and the artisan lingers more over the finer details.
Though these pieces retain their function in tableware, they have also become a sought-after collector’s item. It’s not uncommon to see a display wall of lebrillos and fuentes together in a well-styled living room.
This sizable Fajalauza masterpiece stands as an enduring symbol within Spain’s ceramic tradition, embodying the country’s rich cultural heritage from the Caliphate era through today.
Our dedicated artisans shape and paint each fuente by hand, infusing every piece with its own unique character.
