Our Nenúfar Fajalauza Lebrillo in Green features a beautiful water lily or nenúfar that covers the entire base of the bowl. Lotus petals adorn the walls.
Handcrafted in a small family workshop in southern Spain, this large rustic bowl has long been a staple in Andalusian households. Cherished among collectors today for its beauty and cultural significance, the lebrillo historically served several household functions – as storage, as a washing basin for laundry or as a mixing bowl in the kitchen.
Despite its practical role, artisans deployed substantial creativity when it came to ornamentation of the lebrillo. The Fajalauza ceramic tradition favors Nasrid-style geometric forms, vegetal motifs and depictions of regional birdlife.
The Nasrids and other Muslim cultures that flourished in Andalusia before the 15th century had a keen appreciation for water. They invested in enormous irrigation projects that fed the cities and their lush gardens like those found in the Alhambra. The water lilly which they called nilufar abyad, adorned their fountains and ponds.
