This Florida Fajalauza traditional lebrillo is handpainted in blue and green motifs. This splendid glazed terracotta 'lebrillo' bowl can be traced back to the early 16th century in the Albayzín district of Granada. These unpretentious yet traditional vessels have become iconic symbols of the city, cherished for their connection to everyday life and their role in domestic use. Almost every household in Granada owned one or more, their numbers varying according to the household's size.
The terracotta material was adorned with a white tin and lead glaze, complemented by copper and cobalt oxides that lent the decorative patterns a charming greenish-blue hue. The designs featured vegetal motifs like lilies, branches, birds, or pomegranates. With rolled lips and gently sloping sides, these bowls were primarily used for cooking and marinating food while larger basins also found utility in washing clothes.
These ceramics held great significance for families, passed down from one generation to another as precious heirlooms. If, by any unfortunate circumstance, they broke, they were lovingly repaired with staples, never to be discarded.
This particular piece features a pomegranate on the bough, the fruit so ripe it has burst. The branches ladden with pomegranate flowers form a wreath around the fruit. The walls of the basin bear decorative motifs in blue and green.
