A Mediterranean Haven in the heart of La Rioja

This 19th century family home in the remote village of Sorzano in La Rioja is a breath of fresh air. A minimalist approach to furnishings, white-washed walls, and the prominence of blue conjures up images of the Mediterranean Coast even though we are in fact in the Iregua River Valley, in the interior of the country.

This home also feels Mediterranean because most of the furnishings come from Spain, Italy, Greece, and France.

The Highlight

Framed Spanish tiles and Fajalauza plates adorn the walls. The charming guest bedroom has an understated feel with its soft blue bedding and bold washed-out terracota pillows. A Granada Fajalauza Plate in Blue.

In keeping with the Mediterranean mood, the owners settled on a blue palette for the walls, textiles, and some of the framed tiles. A swath of yellow on the ceiling, on the daybed or in the lampshades adds a cheerful bit of welcome contrast.

The home easily straddles the line between modernity and tradition.

Renovated  in 2005, Casa Josephine retains much of its original charm. Perhaps the most striking features of this house are the original floor tiles sourced from Casa Bergasa, a factory in nearby Logroño.
